Native Habitat Creation

Greater Glider Nesting Boxes

Greater gliders are native to the forests of south-east Australia and are the largest of Australia's Glider species. They have a unique gliding flight path which allows them to leap and propel themselves through the trees, rarely touching the ground. They have a special diet consisting of mainly mature Eucalyptus species, making them highly reliant on large old growth forests. They make their homes in hollow bearing trees which can take over a hundred years for the correct habitat to form - making competition for these hollows extremely high.

Tree Needs works with local councils and the community to install nesting boxes that are specially designed for the Greater Glider to reduce the number of animals killed by climate change, logging & fire and to help support the growth of their population. The Greater Glider has been recently listed as critically endangered by the Victorian government after the 2020-21 bushfires wiped out much of their habitat.

Let us help build better future for the Greater Glider and our native wildlife.

Species Specific Habitat Creation

Tree Needs ecosystem management can help to design & build natural terrestrial and tree-hollow habitats for native birds, mammals and reptiles to use for their home or shelter.

Our organic habitats are designed to integrate into the existing treescape.

We provide species specific consultation on how to best create a new habitat environment or redevelop a landscape to protect existing native flora fauna & flora fauna.

Crimson rosella and rainbow lorikeet habitat

The canopies of these blue gums were removed due to excessive decay and their close proximity to the clients house.

The habitat potential of the trucks was recognised by the client. After a thorough assessment of the hazard potential and the safety of these trunks habitats have been created specific to the local fauna.

There are a lot of blue gums and larger flowering gums in the area making food sources readily available.

Habitat for these birds needs to be more then 5m from the ground and facing a south east direction.

The size of the entry determines what species can enter and what predators can not.

The thermal mass of the surrounding timber insures temperatures remain at consistent levels inside the nesting area. The entry plate is left slightly elevated at the base to allow for drainage and air flow inside the nest.

This practice is quite complex and most certainly should not be attempted by the avid gardener or bird lover. Considerations need to be given to the amount of holding wood that is retained surrounding the habitat to insure the trunk is not prone to failing.

In most cases this practice will be performed underneath the arborists terminal point of attachment so someone who is not adequately qualified or experienced can quite easily cut them selves from the tree.

Tree Needs provide only the most competent arborists for the job.
